Description

This print depicts Ueno Tōshōgū within Ueno Park in Tokyo during spring, when cherry trees surrounding the shrine are in bloom. The Ueno Tōshōgū, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu and dating to the early seventeenth century, features an elaborate karamon gate, gilded oratory, and the avenue of stone lanterns donated by feudal lords across the Edo period. At the evening glow hour, the deep vermillion and gold of the shrine structures are intensified by low horizontal light, contrasting with the pale pink of cherry blossoms overhead and the darkening blue of the sky above. The rows of stone lanterns along the approach cast long shadows across the gravel path, providing compositional rhythm through the middle ground. Hasui renders the architectural complexity of the shrine through careful woodblock registration, requiring multiple carved blocks to achieve the depth of the lacquerwork reds alongside the graduated spring sky. The combination of cherry blossoms, historic shrine architecture, and evening light brings kacho-e and meisho-e traditions together within a single urban composition.
