Description

This impression of the Nakanoshima Park, Sapporo composition is one of several variants Hasui produced of this Hokkaido subject. Nakanoshima Park occupies a small island formed by a bend of the Toyohira River, and its dense tree canopy creates the dark foreground masses characteristic of Hasui's nocturnal landscape prints. The moon, reflected in the river's surface, anchors the composition's light source, while graduated bokashi transitions animate the sky from deeper blue-black near the horizon to a paler wash around the moon itself. Variant impressions of this design can differ in the intensity of the water reflections and the warmth of the moonlight tone, reflecting the hand of individual printers working under the Watanabe or later Doi publishing house imprints.
