Description
This impression of the Edogawa evening snow subject presents a compositional variant or alternate printing in which the relationship between sky, river, and embankment may differ from the primary version. The Edogawa appeared in multiple Hasui series across the Taishō and Shōwa periods, and related but distinct compositions were issued by different publishers at different dates. Hasui's approach to the flat, low-lying riverscape consistently emphasizes atmosphere over topographic specificity: the horizontal sweep of the river, the grey weight of a snow-bearing sky, and the softened forms of bare winter vegetation define the scene. The print belongs to the tradition of depicting Tokyo's peripheral waterways as sites of seasonal beauty, a subject category that found a broad audience among urban Japanese viewers nostalgic for the semirural landscapes at the city's edge.
