Description
This impression belongs to Hasui's well-documented series of snow subjects along the Edogawa, a river on Tokyo's eastern periphery. The composition likely frames the quiet riverbank at dusk, when low light and falling snow merge the boundaries between sky, water, and land. Hasui's mastery of washi's absorbency allowed the printer to pull soft, diffuse gradations across the upper portion of the sheet, conveying the gray heaviness of a snowfall sky. Bare riverside trees—willows or oaks common to the Kanto plain—punctuate the scene with calligraphic dark lines against pale ground. As an earlier-numbered impression, this example may exhibit stronger color saturation than later pulls, reflecting fresher carved blocks and more even baren pressure.
