Description
Hasui returned repeatedly to the Edogawa as a subject, drawn by its wide, reflective surface and the particular quality of light along its low-lying banks. This impression of the evening snow composition captures the Edogawa's characteristic flatness, which renders the landscape nearly abstract under snowfall—horizons blur, and the river's surface mirrors the leaden sky. The foreground likely includes snow-laden vegetation or a wooden embankment, grounding the composition and providing textural contrast to the smooth water. In keeping with shin-hanga practice, Hasui's publisher would have overseen multiple craftsmen—engravers and printers—whose collective skill determines the crispness of line and subtlety of tonal transition visible in any given impression.
