Description
This print depicts the Edogawa river in eastern Tokyo during an evening snowfall, a subject Hasui treated in multiple editions over his career. The composition likely presents a low, open view across the river with a dimming sky overhead and snow accumulating along the near bank. Hasui's treatment of falling snow—rendered through the deliberate placement of white pigment or through the reserved white of the washi itself—gives the scene its central tension between stillness and movement. The evening hour accounts for the compressed tonal range, with little separation between shadow and midtone. This type of meisho-e subject, updating Edo-period conventions of famous-place imagery, was central to the shin-hanga project of presenting Japanese scenery to both domestic and Western audiences.
