Description
A later impression of Hasui's Edogawa evening snow subject, this print captures the broad, still river under snowfall as twilight drains color from the landscape. The Edogawa's flat terrain allowed Hasui to emphasize the horizontal expanse of sky and water, with a low horizon line that gives prominence to the atmospheric gradation above. Thin ice or snow-dusted banks likely frame the composition, while a single boat or distant structure might break the stillness. The characteristic shin-hanga technique of applying multiple blue-gray blocks to build depth in the snow sky is likely visible here. Comparing impressions within this edition reveals incremental shifts in the bokashi gradients and ink saturation that publishers such as Doi Sadaichi applied across press runs.
