Description
The Japanese title Kure no yuki (暮れの雪, dusk snow) identifies this as the second recorded impression of a distinct, formally titled design within Hasui's Edogawa snow series. The title's specificity—evening rather than generic winter—signals Hasui's interest in the precise atmospheric conditions of the transitional hour when natural light drains and the pale luminosity of snow becomes the dominant light source in the landscape. The Edogawa's wide, unhurried flow reflects this residual sky glow, and Hasui likely positioned the horizon low to maximize the expanse of graduated sky. Multiple thin bokashi applications build depth from near-white at the horizon to a darker gray-blue overhead, a technical achievement requiring careful control of dampened washi and pigment concentration across each printing pass.
