Description

Dated 1935 and titled Ishinomaki bosetsu (Evening Snow at Ishinomaki), this oban-format woodblock print belongs to Hasui's series Nihon fūkeishū higashi Nihon hen (Collection of Scenic Views of Japan, Eastern Provinces). The series systematically documented landscapes across eastern Japan, and this print records the port town of Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, in winter. Ishinomaki's working harbor likely appears with snow-laden boats and wooden structures along the waterfront. Printed during the mature phase of Hasui's career, the impression demonstrates the refined bokashi gradation and precise carving that characterized the Watanabe Shozaburo workshop's production in the 1930s.
