Description

This print depicts Kiyomizu-dera, the eighth-century Buddhist temple in the Higashiyama hills east of Kyoto, under evening snowfall. The temple's most distinctive architectural feature—its wooden stage (butai) cantilevered over the hillside on a grid of 139 zelkova pillars—would serve as the compositional anchor. Covered in snow, the veranda's broad horizontal plane contrasts with the steep forested slope below and the illuminated or darkening sky above. Hasui visited Kyoto's famous sites on multiple occasions, and Kiyomizu-dera, as one of Japan's most recognized temple structures, became a recurring subject in shin-hanga design. The title's use of bosetsu (暮雪, evening snow) rather than the more neutral yuki (snow) emphasizes the temporal and atmospheric specificity central to Hasui's meisho-e practice.
