Description

This Kyoto subject presents Kiyomizu-dera in the Higashiyama district under a heavy snowfall at dusk. The temple complex, founded in 778 and reconstructed in 1633 under Tokugawa Iemitsu, commands an elevated position that affords a view over Kyoto's eastern neighborhoods—a spatial relationship Hasui would exploit compositionally by setting the pagoda or main hall against a deep bokashi sky while the city recedes into the snowy distance below. The dark lacquered columns and veranda railings of the main hall create strong linear elements against accumulated white snow, while pine branches bent under snow weight add organic contrast. Unlike Hasui's flat river compositions, the Kiyomizu subject offers significant topographic drama. Published for both domestic and Western markets, this design exemplifies the shin-hanga movement's effort to document traditional Japanese architectural heritage in the medium of the hand-printed woodblock.
