Description
This print depicts Terajima Village in Tokyo's eastern outskirts at dusk under snowfall, a subject that recurs across several Hasui compositions likely produced in the early Taishô period. The village setting — thatched or tiled rooftops, wooden fences, narrow earthen paths — appears softened by an accumulation of white while a cold blue-grey sky presses down from above. Hasui's treatment of such modest suburban and semirural subjects was a deliberate aesthetic choice, drawing on the bokashi gradation technique to render the transitional light of evening when snow-covered ground reflects residual brightness against a darkening atmosphere. Multiple editions of this composition exist with variations in color and impression quality.
