Description
One of several known impressions of the Terajima Village evening snow composition, this print captures the same eastern Tokyo subject — wooden residential architecture under a settling snowfall at dusk — that Hasui explored across related designs. In shin-hanga production, multiple impressions from a single set of blocks could vary considerably depending on the printer's mixing of pigments, application of bokashi gradation, and the particular lot of washi used. This impression may show distinctions in the intensity of blue-grey atmospheric tones or the weight of white pigment used to render accumulated snow on rooftops. The subject belongs to the genre of meisho-e applied to contemporary Tokyo's unremarkable neighborhoods, treated with the dignity of classical landscape.
