Evening Snow at Terajima Village (Yuki ni fururu Terajima mura), from the series "Twelve Scenes of Tokyo (Tokyo junidai)"
by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
A Tokyo snow scene — one of the most sought-after subject combinations in Hasui's output. Urban Tokyo combined with winter precipitation drives the highest prices in his catalogue, led by the celebrated Shiba Zojoji in Snow ($10,000–$16,000 for fine impressions). Evening Snow at Sanjugen Canal and Evening Snow at Terajima Village are canonical examples of this subject. Pre-earthquake impressions (before September 1923) are the rarest of all, as the Kanto Earthquake destroyed Watanabe's workshop and most early blocks.
Evening Snow at Terajima Village, from the Twelve Scenes of Tokyo series published in 1920, depicts the rural settlement of Terajima in what is now the Mukojima district of Sumida ward — then a village on the eastern fringe of Tokyo, its farmhouses and temple precincts lying across the Sumida River from the main city. The falling snow softens the outlines of the village rooftops and fields, and the "evening" in the title places the composition in the gray half-light where snow continues to fall and the day's color drains away. This is one of Hasui's earliest snow-village compositions, establishing the vocabulary of the falling-snow rural scene he would refine across his career.
