Description
Hasui's depiction of Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto during an evening snowfall presents one of Japan's most iconic temple complexes through his characteristic atmospheric lens. The Otowa-san hillside setting, with the Main Hall's projecting wooden stage and surrounding pagoda, receives a covering of snow that softens architectural edges while the failing light shifts the palette toward cool blue-grey. Kiyomizu-dera was among the established meisho (famous places) that Hasui incorporated into his travel-based series, and his Kyoto subjects often appeared in series published by Watanabe Shôzaburô alongside his Tokyo landscapes. The print's multi-block construction would have required precise registration to align the architectural linework with broad atmospheric color fields and the white of accumulated snow.
