Description
A second impression of the Kiyomizu-dera evening snow composition, this print shows the same Kyoto temple subject — the wooden stage, forested hillside, and pagoda of the hillside complex — under falling snow at dusk. In shin-hanga production, multiple print runs from the same blocks could yield impressions with perceptible tonal differences, particularly in the graduated bokashi passages of sky and the relative weight of blue shadows on snow surfaces. Kiyomizu-dera's architectural forms provided Hasui with strong diagonal and rectilinear geometries to anchor the composition against the soft atmospheric field of snowfall. The temple's elevation above Kyoto allowed the composition to incorporate a view depth extending into the city below, reinforcing the sense of stillness and cold that defines Hasui's winter subjects.
