Description
One of multiple impressions of Hasui's Kiyomizu-dera snow scene, this print depicts the celebrated hillside temple complex in eastern Kyoto under evening snowfall. Kiyomizu-dera's wooden stage, cantilevered over the slope on a framework of zelkova pillars, provides a distinctive architectural element against the forested hillside of Higashiyama. Hasui likely positions the viewpoint to capture the stage in profile or from slightly below, with snow on the pagoda roof and bare trees framing the structure. As a subject within the classical meisho-e tradition, Kiyomizu-dera carried established visual associations, and Hasui's treatment through the shin-hanga process — with its capacity for nuanced bokashi gradation and layered pigments — brings atmospheric specificity to a site already familiar from centuries of landscape imagery.
