Description
A solitary rural dwelling buried under accumulated snow is a recurring motif in Hasui's extensive body of winter landscapes, the category for which he earned the epithet 'Artist of Snow.' This composition likely sets a thatched or tiled farmhouse against a twilight sky, with blue-grey shadows pooling in the hollows of snow-laden eaves and ground. Hasui rendered snow with carefully differentiated whites — warm near interior light sources, cool in shadowed areas — achieved through precise baren pressure and selective inking on washi. The isolation of a single structure within an expansive white field creates a hushed, contemplative atmosphere. Works of this type were produced using multiple carved woodblocks, with individual blocks contributing the subtly graded sky and the warm glow visible through paper screens.
