Description
Arai, a post-town in the Enshu region (present-day western Shizuoka Prefecture) along the shores of Lake Hamana, was historically known as a barrier station and fishing settlement. Hasui's depiction of this location would draw on the characteristic visual vocabulary of coastal fishing communities: wooden boats drawn up or moored, nets and rigging visible, and low buildings of the working waterfront. Lake Hamana's brackish inland sea quality — connected to the Pacific but separated by a narrow outlet — creates distinctive water colors and atmospheric conditions. The horizontality of such a harbor scene, with its reflections in still or lightly riffled water, suited Hasui's preference for compositions with strong tonal separation between sky, water, and architectural or boat forms. The Enshu coastline appears in his broader survey of Japanese regional landscapes.
