Description
A view from backstage or the wings of a Japanese theater — whether a kabuki stage, a provincial theater, or a modern venue — would give Hasui unusual access to the structural and spatial qualities of theatrical performance spaces. The composition likely depicts performers in costume or stagehands in the midst of a production, viewed from a lateral angle that reveals the backstage machinery invisible to the audience. This subject type differs markedly from Hasui's landscape work, placing him closer to the [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) or figure-print traditions. The dramatic lighting conditions of theatrical performance, with strong spotlights or traditional lamp illumination against deep shadows in the wings, would demand the same sensitivity to tonal range that characterizes his night landscapes. The print may capture a moment of transition or preparation rather than the performance itself.
