Description
The Japanese title 伊豆長岡霜の朝 (Izu Nagaoka shimo no asa — Frost Morning at Izu Nagaoka) designates the hot-spring town of Nagaoka in Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture. Frost (shimo) rather than snow defines the cold depicted here: a morning scene in which frost coats vegetation, rooftops, and ground surfaces with fine crystalline white without the heavy accumulation of snowfall. Hasui's rendering of frost required a different technical approach than snow — suggesting rime on branches and ground through thin pale lines and reserved washi rather than solid white masses. The morning light, often pink-grey before full sunrise, would illuminate the frost crystals against the darker tones of wet ground or aged wood. The hot-spring setting may introduce steam rising from outdoor baths or drainage channels, creating contrast between the cold frost and thermal warmth characteristic of onsen towns.
