Description

Magome-juku is one of the best-preserved post towns on the Nakasendo highway, situated on a steep hillside in what is now Gifu Prefecture. By the time Hasui depicted it, Magome had acquired nostalgic significance as a remnant of Edo-period travel culture. A full moon over the town would illuminate the characteristic stone-paved slope, the overhanging eaves of machiya townhouses, and the surrounding forested hills of the Kiso Valley. The interplay of lamplight from shuttered windows and moonlight on the lane — each requiring careful separation of warm and cool tones across multiple blocks — characterizes Hasui's most accomplished nocturnal townscape subjects. The composition likely adopts a slightly elevated viewpoint looking down the slope, a perspective that reveals the sequential rhythm of the rooflines.
