The Souvenirs of Travel series (First, Second, and Third Series, 1919–1922) represents Hasui's earliest major publishing relationship with Watanabe Shozaburo. Pre-earthquake impressions (before September 1923) are the rarest — the Kanto Earthquake destroyed Watanabe's workshop and most original blocks, making surviving early round-seal impressions exceptionally valuable at $2,500–$8,000. Post-earthquake editions were printed from recut blocks and trade at lower prices.
Horai Rock at Kiso River, from the Souvenirs of Travel, Third Series published in 1928, depicts the Horaiiwa — a celebrated rock formation in the Kiso River gorge near Inuyama in present-day Aichi Prefecture — set within the dramatic river scenery of the Kiso gorge where the swift river cuts through layers of paleozoic sediment. The Horaiiwa, named for the legendary island paradise Horai, rises from the river bed as a freestanding rock formation that has been depicted in poetry and visual art since the Edo period. The Rivers & Lakes and Bokashi tags indicate a composition dominated by the river's movement and the atmospheric sky gradient.
