Description

Published as part of Hasui's Tabi miyage dai-sanshu (Souvenirs of Travel, Third Series), this print depicts the Nakayama-shichiri mountain road through Hida province under winter snow. The Tabi miyage series, produced in collaboration with publisher Watanabe Shozaburo beginning in the early 1920s, documented Hasui's travel sketching expeditions across Japan in horizontal or vertical oban format. The Hida subject, a steep mountain route through the Hida River gorge in present-day Gifu Prefecture, offered dramatic winter scenery well suited to Hasui's signature treatment of snow light. The series attribution connects this print to a specific publication program and production period, making it among the more precisely documented impressions of this composition. The characteristic features of the Third Series — color range, paper stock, and seal placement — help distinguish it from related unnumbered editions.
