Description
This meisho-e depicting the Seto Inland Sea (Setonaikai) captures the characteristic stillness of that sheltered body of water, where pine-studded islets rise from glassy shallows and small fishing vessels rest at anchor or move under sail. Hasui treated the Inland Sea repeatedly throughout his career, drawn to its layered spatial recession and the soft gradations of light it offered. The composition likely employs horizontal banding of water, land, and sky, with delicate bokashi gradations in the sky to suggest early morning or late-afternoon light. Printed on washi in the oban format, the color palette would tend toward muted blues and greens punctuated by the warm tones of weathered wooden hulls, evoking the unhurried rhythms of maritime life in western Japan.
