Description
Inogashira Park, located in Musashino west of central Tokyo, was a favored subject for artists depicting the capital's seasonal landscapes. This spring composition likely centers on the park's shallow pond, where rowboats pass beneath flowering cherry trees (somei yoshino) whose blossoms extend in canopies over the water. Hasui's spring palette typically employs soft pinks rendered through dilute bengara or pink pigments against pale blue water and the warm gray-brown of bare branches still in transition. The oban-format sheet would show petals either in full bloom or beginning to fall (hanafubuki), with figures in the boats providing human scale against the enclosing foliage. The scene exemplifies Hasui's ability to locate lyrical seasonal specificity within familiar recreational landscapes near Tokyo.
