Abuto no Kannon
by Kawase Hasui
From the Selection of Views of Japan series — a curated group of Hasui's most praised regional subjects. Series membership adds collector appeal beyond that of standalone compositions. Pre-war lifetime editions with the Watanabe copyright seal (A–D types) represent the most desirable impressions; atmospheric subjects (snow, rain, night) within this series command the highest prices. Pre-earthquake impressions (before September 1923) are the rarest of all, as the Kanto Earthquake destroyed Watanabe's workshop and most early blocks.
Kannon Temple at Abuto, published in 1922 as part of the Selection of Views of Japan series, depicts the Abuto Kannon — a Buddhist temple dramatically sited on a rocky promontory jutting into the Seto Inland Sea in present-day Hiroshima Prefecture. The temple's main hall cantilevered over the sea cliff, accessible via steep stone steps, is one of the Inland Sea's most visually striking religious sites, and Hasui's oban composition with its bokashi sky captures the tension between the delicate wooden structures and the vast expanse of water below. The Seto Inland Sea's mild light and island-dotted horizon give this subject a luminosity distinct from Hasui's northern Japan compositions.
