The Souvenirs of Travel series (First, Second, and Third Series, 1919–1922) represents Hasui's earliest major publishing relationship with Watanabe Shozaburo. Pre-earthquake impressions (before September 1923) are the rarest — the Kanto Earthquake destroyed Watanabe's workshop and most original blocks, making surviving early round-seal impressions exceptionally valuable at $2,500–$8,000. Post-earthquake editions were printed from recut blocks and trade at lower prices.
- Pre-earthquake lifetime edition (round Watanabe seal, pre-1923): $2,500–$8,000
- Post-earthquake pre-war edition (Watanabe seal A–D): $800–$3,000
- Posthumous/Heisei edition: $200–$600
Description
Karasu Marsh at Akita, published in 1927 as part of the Souvenirs of Travel, Third Series, depicts the wetland area known as Karasunuma — the "crow marsh" — in the flat Akita plain. The marsh, part of the extensive low-lying landscape of the Akita basin, offered Hasui an opportunity for an expansive horizontal composition of still water, sedge grasses, and wide sky that contrasts with the mountain and coastal subjects that populate the Third Series. The absence of snow and prominent bokashi tags suggests a warm-season depiction, the wide marshland catching the diffuse light of a summer or autumn sky.
