Description
One of several recorded compositions Hasui made of Kinkakuji in winter conditions, this print shows the three-story Zen temple pavilion set against a snow-covered garden along the shores of Kyoko-chi. Later printings of Hasui's Kinkakuji designs were reissued by Watanabe Shozaburo's publishing house across multiple decades, and variant numbering in collector records often distinguishes these successive print runs, which could exhibit differences in ink tonality, bokashi transitions, and color registration. The pavilion's second story, lacquered in black, and its gold-leafed upper tiers create a strong tonal contrast against surrounding white accumulation on garden stones and pine boughs. Still water in the foreground doubles the architectural subject.
