Kiyomizu Hall, Ueno, from the series "Twenty Views of Tokyo" (Tokyo nijukei, Ueno Kiyomizudo)
by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
From the Twenty Views of Tokyo series (1925–1930) — Hasui's most prestigious documented series and the foundation of serious collecting. These prints document interwar Tokyo neighborhoods with extraordinary atmospheric sensitivity. Christie's is the most active auction house for this series, having handled 533+ Hasui lots. Series membership adds a consistent premium over standalone compositions of comparable subjects. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Kiyomizu Hall at Ueno, from the Twenty Views of Tokyo series published in 1928, depicts the Kiyomizudo — a small Buddhist hall perched on a hillside within Ueno Park, built in 1631 as a scaled-down version of Kyoto's Kiyomizudera — overlooking the Shinobazu Pond below and the broader Ueno park landscape. The Ueno Kiyomizudo's elevated veranda gave Hasui a composition combining the temple architecture with the panoramic view of the park, the pond, and the Tokyo lowlands visible in the distance. The 1928 Twenty Views composition places this intimate Ueno structure alongside the series' more prominent landmarks.
