Description

This impression is part of the 絶筆 (zeppitsu) group marking Hasui's last completed design, depicting the Konjikido of Chusonji Temple at Hiraizumi in deep winter. The Konjikido, a National Treasure of twelfth-century Buddhist architecture associated with the northern Fujiwara clan, stands within an outer protective hall; the composition would show this outer structure framing the glimpsed gilded interior, with snow blanketing the surrounding precinct. Hasui's long engagement with this subject across his career — depicting Hiraizumi in both earlier and later periods — reflects the site's importance to the canonical Japanese landscape itinerary and its particular suitability to his atmospheric, season-focused approach. Technically, the print relies on careful multi-block registration to render snow surfaces, timber grain in the outer hall, and the subdued winter sky, with the paper's own white serving as the primary snow tone. Each hand-printed impression carries slight variations characteristic of shin-hanga production.
