A nocturnal water scene — one of Hasui's most technically sophisticated subjects, requiring the master printing of both moonlight effects and water reflections simultaneously. Gallery retail for Moon at Magome (a comparable night-water scene) is listed at $15,000 by Egenolf Gallery. Moonlight over Kanazawa Canal (postwar, 1950) sold for $2,300 at Bonhams London (2022) even in a later edition — earlier impressions command substantially more. Pre-earthquake impressions (before September 1923) are the rarest of all, as the Kanto Earthquake destroyed Watanabe's workshop and most early blocks.
Kotsuki River at Kagoshima, from the Selection of Scenes from Japan published in 1922, depicts the Kotsuki River flowing through the castle town of Kagoshima at the southern tip of Kyushu — a river that defines the western boundary of the old city, with the distinctive profile of the active volcano Sakurajima visible across Kagoshima Bay beyond. The Kotsuki River's urban embankments and the dramatic volcanic backdrop of Sakurajima — perpetually emitting ash and occasionally erupting — gave Hasui an extraordinary landscape composition where the domesticated city river meets geological drama. The Rivers & Lakes and Bokashi tags indicate an atmospheric treatment.
