Description
This print depicts the Dairaidou Shrine in Kumagai, Saitama Prefecture, a Shinto sanctuary dedicated to Raijin, the deity of thunder and lightning. Hasui likely rendered the shrine precinct under atmospheric conditions — overcast sky, rain, or evening light — that suited his characteristic approach to sacred architecture within landscape. The composition would draw the viewer through a torii gate or cryptomeria-lined approach toward the main hall, with the surrounding trees rendered in layered green and grey tones achieved through careful bokashi gradation. The stillness of the grounds and the solidity of the wooden structures exemplify Hasui's ability to convey the spiritual weight of provincial sacred sites that rarely appeared in mainstream tourism imagery.
