River, lake, and coastal scenes form the largest single category in Hasui's output — steady, popular subjects with consistent demand. Value is driven primarily by edition period (pre-war vs. postwar lifetime vs. posthumous), condition, and the presence of seasonal atmospheric effects. Night and rain variants of water scenes command 20–40% premiums over comparable daytime views. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Lake Kawaguchi, published in May 1932, depicts Kawaguchiko — the most accessible and most visited of the Fuji Five Lakes, at the foot of Fuji's northern slope near Fujiyoshida — in spring, with the mountain's reflection visible in the lake's surface and the cherry blossoms that line the lake's northern shore blooming in May. Lake Kawaguchi's accessibility from Tokyo (just two hours by train from the early twentieth century) made it the primary viewpoint for Fuji's reflection subjects, and Hasui's May 1932 composition likely captures the lake at its most celebrated seasonal moment. The Rivers & Lakes and [Bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) tags indicate the atmospheric compositional approach.
