Description
This impression records a distinct printing state of Hasui's Miyajima snow composition, one to which he returned in multiple versions given the subject's appeal. The contrast between the shrine's vermillion lacquerwork and surrounding snow — a combination rare in the actual climate — made Miyajima under snowfall a particularly sought-after image. Variations among impressions of this subject may include differences in the rendering of the sea surface (ranging from pale grey to deep blue-green), the density of snow on rooftiles and torii crossbeams, and the treatment of the winter sky through bokashi gradation. The great torii's scale relative to the shrine buildings typically anchors the composition's spatial depth.
