Description

Lingering Snow at Sanno Shrine depicts the Hie Shrine precinct in Akasaka, Tokyo, after snowfall has partially melted, leaving wet accumulations on rooftops, stone lanterns, and the broad approach steps. Hasui's snow scenes frequently isolate a single figure or omit human presence entirely to emphasize the stillness of a cold urban morning. The shrine gate and its surrounding cryptomeria trees would anchor the composition vertically, while horizontal bands of snow-covered ground recede toward the shrine buildings. Bokashi gradation across the sky — progressing from deep indigo or pale blue at the upper register to warm grey near the treeline — creates the characteristic tonal atmosphere of Hasui's winter landscapes. Printed on washi paper using water-based pigments and the baren, this oban-format design reflects the shin-hanga movement's interest in reimagining Tokyo's sacred spaces through the lens of seasonal observation and quiet urban melancholy.
