Description

Moonlight views of Matsushima place this print within one of Hasui's most technically demanding subjects. Rendering nocturnal scenes required the printing team to layer deep indigo, gray, and black pigments on washi paper while preserving the luminous quality of reflected moonlight on water — an effect achieved through careful reservation of the paper's white ground and the precise application of silver or pale yellow for the moon itself. The pine-covered islands of Matsushima Bay would appear as dark silhouettes against a graduated night sky, their reflections broken by gentle rippling in the water below. Hasui studied nocturnal atmosphere carefully, noting how moonlight flattens detail while intensifying the contrast between dark masses and lit surfaces. This design belongs to a lineage of tsukimi (moon-viewing) imagery in Japanese printmaking that extends back through Hiroshige and Hokusai, here recast in the more painterly, atmospheric register of shin-hanga.
