Description
Meguro Fudo Shrine, dated 1931, depicts Ryusen-ji temple in the Meguro district of Tokyo, a site long associated with the deity Fudo Myo-o and known for its sacred waterfall. Hasui likely centers the composition on the stone-paved approach, stone lanterns, or the waterfall enclosure—elements that define the site's visual character. The print probably employs the dark greens and mossy blacks of the temple's old-growth trees against stone surfaces and wooden architecture. The 1931 date places it within Hasui's mature period, when his treatment of shrine and temple subjects balanced careful architectural observation with the atmospheric use of seasonal light. The site was a familiar destination for Tokyo residents and a subject with established meisho-e associations.
