Description

Published by Watanabe Shozaburo as part of the series Twenty Views of Tokyo (Tôkyô nijûkei), this oban-format print depicts the Magome neighborhood of Ota ward under moonlight. The Twenty Views series, initiated in the early Taisho period, documented Tokyo neighborhoods that retained older architectural and urban character despite the city's rapid modernization. Hasui rendered the narrow, gently sloped lane bordered by traditional wooden townhouses with a restrained nocturnal palette. The moon — likely positioned above the roofline or behind a tree — illuminates whitewashed walls and wet stone paving while warm interior light escapes through shoji screens. The publisher's red seal and Hasui's signature in the lower margin identify this impression as an authorized Watanabe edition. The series as a whole stands as an important visual record of pre-earthquake Tokyo.
