Moon at Umagome, from the series "Twenty Views of Tokyo" (Tokyo nijukei, Uragome no tsuki)
by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
A nocturnal subject from the Twenty Views of Tokyo — combining the series' collector prestige with the premium attached to Hasui's night scenes. Moonlit canal and waterfront views in this series have achieved gallery retail prices of $15,000 (Moon at Magome, Egenolf Gallery). Christie's recorded $13,860 for an unidentified landscape from the Landscapes of Japan sale (March 2024).
Umagome in the Twenty Views of Tokyo series appears here under moonlight — the neighborhood likely in the Sumida River area of eastern Tokyo, the water surface reflecting the moon in a wide, horizontal composition. This 1930 print from the Twenty Views of Tokyo captures one of Hasui's standard moonlit urban-waterway compositions: dark sky, still water, silhouetted buildings along the bank, and a clear moon above or reflected below. The series' geographic range across Tokyo meant subjects from crowded central areas to quieter outer neighborhoods.
