Description

Matsuyama Castle, situated atop Katsuyama hill in Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku, is one of twelve surviving original Japanese castles and one of only three that retain their original tenshu, or main keep. Hasui likely depicts the castle's distinctive multi-tiered white plaster exterior reflecting moonlight against a darkened sky, with the steep forested hillside forming a contrasting dark mass below the pale structure. The castle's elevated position lends itself to compositions in which sky dominates, allowing Hasui to develop complex bokashi gradations in the upper register while the architectural subject occupies the middle ground. Moon positioning — whether rising behind the castle or illuminating it from the side — determines the shadow patterns on the castle's characteristic hip-and-gable roof structure. This is among Hasui's Shikoku compositions produced during his travels for the Watanabe publishing house.
