A nocturnal subject from the Twenty Views of Tokyo — combining the series' collector prestige with the premium attached to Hasui's night scenes. Moonlit canal and waterfront views in this series have achieved gallery retail prices of $15,000 (Moon at Magome, Egenolf Gallery). Christie's recorded $13,860 for an unidentified landscape from the Landscapes of Japan sale (March 2024).
Moon over the Ara River at Akabane, published in 1929 as part of the Twenty Views of Tokyo series, depicts the wide Arakawa floodway under moonlight at the Akabane district in northern Tokyo. The Arakawa is one of the largest rivers running through the Kanto plain, and at Akabane its banks opened into an expansive horizon that gave Hasui room to develop a broad, horizontally composed night scene with the moon's reflection shimmering on the river's surface. The moonlit water reflections and bokashi sky-gradation mark this as one of the Twenty Views series' most technically ambitious nocturnal compositions.
