Description

Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima island in Hiroshima Bay is among Japan's most frequently depicted scenic sites, known above all for its vermillion torii gate standing in the tidal flats of the Seto Inland Sea. Hasui's moonlit treatment likely centers on the torii's reflection in still water at high tide, when the gate appears to float free of any ground plane. The composition would contrast the deep vermillion of the lacquered wood structure — rendered through a pure red-orange block — against the blue-indigo tones of the nocturnal water and sky. Miyajima's forested mountain, Mount Misen, would form the dark background mass. The interaction between the warm hue of the torii and the cool moonlit water surface demonstrates Hasui's characteristic use of color temperature contrast as a structural compositional tool. This is among his most iconic meisho-e subjects.
