Description

The great torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island in Hiroshima Bay is among the most recognizable architectural forms in Japanese visual culture. Hasui's nocturnal composition depicts the vermilion-painted torii rising from the tidal shallows under moonlight, the shrine's covered corridors visible beyond. In darkness, the gate's red pigment is rendered as deep ochre or rust against a cool blue-black sky ground. The moon, positioned in the upper portion of the composition, casts a reflected path across the still water of the bay. Miyajima was designated one of Japan's Three Views (Nihon sankei) and a canonical subject for travel prints across multiple periods. Hasui produced multiple versions and impressions of this composition, with the Watanabe Shozaburo workshop maintaining careful standards across printings. The subject's combination of sacred architecture, tidal landscape, and nocturnal atmosphere made it one of the most commercially significant designs in the shin-hanga publishing program.
