Morning in Onomichi, from the series "Collection of Scenic Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition" (Nihon fukeishu II Kansia hen, Onomichi no asa)
by Kawase Hasui

by Kawase Hasui
From the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan series — Hasui's most extensive documented series, covering regional landscapes across the entire country. These prints document local sites that often saw little representation in earlier ukiyo-e, giving them documentary as well as artistic value. Snow scenes within this collection (like Saishoin Temple in the Snow, $3,000 at Artelino 2023) command significant premiums. Pre-war lifetime editions bearing the Watanabe copyright seal (A through G types, 1926–1944) are the most desirable.
Onomichi, the hillside port city in Hiroshima Prefecture facing the Seto Inland Sea, is shown at morning in this 1940 print from the Collection of Scenic Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition. The city's famous slope — where narrow lanes connect temple after temple on the hillside above the harbor — is most atmospheric in early morning before the day's visitors arrive, and Hasui likely depicted the harbor and its reflected light at dawn. Onomichi's combination of water, hill, and historic temple city made it one of the most compositionally rich cities in western Japan.
