Description
Mitohama (Mito Beach) refers to the coastal area near Hitachinaka in Ibaraki Prefecture, a stretch of Pacific shoreline accessible from the castle town of Mito. A morning print of this location would center on the interplay of sea and sky at dawn — the gradual brightening of the eastern horizon over the Pacific, the white of breaking surf, and the flat sandy shore that characterizes much of Ibaraki's coastline. Hasui's treatment would emphasize atmospheric effect over topographical specificity: the color gradations of the sky from deep blue-gray at the zenith to warm orange or pale gold at the horizon, achieved through the horizontal bokashi technique executed by skilled printers dampening the washi before inking each block. The print belongs to a category of Hasui designs focused on the open eastern seacoast, where the wide Pacific horizon and unobstructed sky offered formal freedom distinct from his more enclosed mountain and woodland subjects.
