Description

Published as part of the series Selected Views of the Tôkaidô Road (Tôkaidô fûkei senshû), this print presents Nissaka as one stop within a broader documentation of the historic highway's surviving landscape. Series format shaped Hasui's compositional decisions: each print needed to function individually while reading coherently alongside the others in the set. The Nissaka design within this series may differ in mood or season from the rain-focused impressions produced independently, reflecting the need for variety across a multi-print publication. The old highway at Nissaka—where remnants of the Edo-period road surface and roadside trees persisted into the twentieth century—provided Hasui with material that bridged historical association and observed landscape. Printed on oban-format washi with the refined registration characteristic of Watanabe's production, the image conveys the wooded seclusion of the mountain passage.
