Description
Okayama Castle, known as Ujo or 'Crow Castle' for its lacquered black exterior walls, stands on the Asahi River in central Okayama city. Hasui's composition likely viewed the castle from across the river, using the water surface as a reflective plane to double the vertical mass of the keep. The black exterior — distinctive among Japanese castles, which more commonly feature white plaster walls — would have presented particular challenges for the carver and printer, requiring careful ink gradation to model the tower's form against the sky. The Asahi River's foreground, treated with horizontal [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi), would anchor the composition and create the atmospheric depth characteristic of Hasui's architectural landscape work. Korakuen garden, adjacent to the castle, may contribute additional foliage framing.
