Description
A second printing or compositional variant of Hasui's Ikegami Honmonji pagoda subject. The temple complex in Ota Ward, Tokyo, with its prominent five-story pagoda visible above the surrounding cedar and ginkgo trees, attracted printmakers and pilgrims alike across the seasons. In this variant, differences from the primary edition may appear in the treatment of the sky—the range of the bokashi gradation, the warmth or coolness of the upper register—or in the seasonal character of the surrounding foliage. Hasui's careful draftsmanship, developed through years of travel sketching across Japan, gives the pagoda's architectural elements—bracketed eaves, sloped rooflines, and the finial pinnacle—precise definition within a broader atmospheric composition consistent with shin-hanga production values.
