Description
A third recorded variant of Hasui's composition centered on the pagoda at Ikegami Honmonji, Tokyo. Hasui returned to prominent architectural landmarks at different times of year and under different publishers, producing closely related designs that differ in seasonal atmosphere, time of day, or tonal balance. The pagoda at Honmonji—a pilgrimage site associated with the death of the Buddhist reformer Nichiren in 1282—offered a strong vertical subject against which Hasui could demonstrate his handling of sky and distance through gradated bokashi. This variant may reflect a different seasonal reading than companion editions: winter bare branches, spring haze, or the dense foliage of summer each would alter the color distribution across the print's surface and the character of the light behind the tiered tower.
